KECNS Educational Program
Children at Kent Education Center and Nursery School (KECNS) meets the individual needs of the diverse population of children and families served by our program, including those with cultural, language and developmental differences. Families have flexibility to enroll for one, two, three, four or five days a week.
The daily schedule includes indoor and outdoor physical activities, which allows for fine and gross motor development. Daily activities include opportunity for problem-solving experiences that help to formulate language development, emotional literacy, and sensory discrimination.
Licensed and operated in accordance with standards set by the State of Connecticut, the school is administered by a volunteer Board of Directors, comprised of parents and members of the community. The school’s Director and Staff adhere to the developmentally appropriate practices and policies of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

KECNS is a play-based program with an emphasis on the social and emotional development of children. Students spend extended time in free play in the indoor playroom and outdoors on the playground. KECNS children are supported to recognize, express and manage feelings and to recognize the feelings of others. An introduction to reading and mathematics is offered informally through songs and games which incorporate counting and word or sound recognition skills, thus providing a foundation for later learning.
Teachers strive to incorporate the interests of the current children in the curriculum. For example, when multiple students have shown an interest in dinosaurs, books, crafts, and songs revolve around this theme for the week. Another week, butterflies take center stage when students learn about the Life Cycle of the Butterfly as it goes from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. A live Caterpillar to Butterfly Kit becomes a highlight as the class grows their own butterflies, and art projects, songs, and books reflect this learning.
KECNS students are invited to participate in two performances per year, a Holiday Performance in December and a End-of-Year Ceremony in June. See Events.
Children have the opportunity to express their own ideas and feelings through creative experiences in all parts of the program, including:
