KCNS Hours 2023-24
Half Day Monday to Friday 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM Student drop off no later than 8:45 AM Full Day Monday to Friday 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM Student drop off no later than 8:45 AM. Children who remain at KCNS 5 hours, or longer, per day are required, by CT state law, to nap (or rest) on a cot for, at least, 45 minutes in the afternoon. KCS Extended Afternoon Monday to Thursday 11:30 AM - 3:30 PM KCNS offers an afternoon program for students who attend the Kent Center School (KCS) Morning PreK program that runs Monday through Thursday. As part of our Afternoon Program, a Region 1 Bus brings the children from KCS to KCNS at 11:20 AM. |
Start Date
Tuesday, August 29, 2023 Calendar KCNS follows Region 1 2023-24 calendar, mainly for first/last day, spring break, and holiday recess, including cancellations and delays due to inclement weather. (We do not follow Region 1 for half days, late openings and conference days.) Drop off/Pick up
Parents and students enter at the blue entrance door of KCNS and bring their children downstairs, upon arrival. At dismissal, pick up is either on the playground or inside through the blue entrance door to KCNS. Students should be dropped off no later than 8:45 AM and picked up no later than 1:30 PM, for the Half Day Program, and 3:30 PM, for the Full Day program.
Illness
As stated in the CT Office of Early Childhood (OEC) guidelines, children and staff with mild respiratory symptoms (e.g., infrequent cough, congestion, runny nose, sore throat, etc.) may continue participating in-person as long as:
Anyone who has any respiratory symptoms should not come to KCNS if:
Check to ensure temperature is below 100 degrees and observe for symptoms. Students MUST stay home if they are feeling sick.
As outlined by the CDC, hand washing is one of the best safeguards for mitigating the spread of illness. Therefore, throughout the day, students and teachers will hand wash, as well as, increase daily cleaning measures as also outlined by the CDC and OEC.
Covid-19 regulations and guidelines provided by the State of Connecticut, the Office of Early Childhood (OEC) and KCNS' health consultant will be strictly enforced to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and families. As per OEC guidelines, masks are not required on a daily basis, but a child may wear one, if the family prefers.
What to bring to school?
Please be aware when sending students to school that they will be playing, climbing, painting, and getting dirty outside everyday. Please have students dress accordingly.
Snack and Lunch
Please pack a snack, a lunch, and water bottle everyday. Ice Packs with snack and lunch are required (by the CT Office of Early Childhood, OEC).
Nut-free Policy
KCNS is an allergy-aware facility. Please inform teachers, if your child has food restrictions. Thank you for helping keep our children safe.
Nap time (for Full Day Program)
Children who are in the Full Day Program and remain at KCNS 5 hours, or longer, per day are required, by CT state law, to nap (or rest) on a cot for, at least, 45 minutes in the afternoon. Every Friday you will take your child's nap gear home to wash and return the following week.
Communication
Communication is the key to our family-school relationship. In each cubby, each child has their own folder, which holds their artwork, projects and any notices being sent home. Teachers can always be reached via email or by phone.
Cellphone Policy
Personal cellphones may not be used by KCNS teachers during working hours with children. KCNS teachers and staff are allowed to take occasional photos of KCNS activities and children during special occasions, provided families have granted permission on the Use of Photos enrollment form.
Parent volunteers
We love to have parent volunteers. We ask that each parent chooses a one day during the school year to be a Mystery Reader!
Flexible enrollment
Student can attend KCNS from one to five days per week.
Class size
The Nursery School class is limited to twenty children, with a teacher to student ratio of 10:1. Actual class size fluctuates depending on daily enrollment.

- they are fever-free (< 100°F) and feel well enough to participate,
- they do not live with anyone who has had COVID-19 in the past 2 weeks, and
- they test negative for COVID-19 before coming to the program every day they have symptoms, as well as one final test on the morning their symptoms have completely resolved.
Anyone who has any respiratory symptoms should not come to KCNS if:
- they have a fever (≥ 100°F) or feel feverish (they should not report in-person until their fever has resolved for at least 24 hours without the use of medication), and/or
- they live with a person who recently tested positive for COVID-19 (within the past 2 weeks).

- If a household member has COVID, KCNS children or staff must stay home for 5 days (from diagnosis). On the 6th day, if the child or staff member tests negative and is symptom free, they may return to school that day.
- If KCNS children or staff develop any symptoms or test positive for COVID, they must continue to stay home.
- If a child or staff member develops COVID, it will be reported to KCNS staff and families anonymously (no identifiable information will be shared).
What to bring to school?
- TWO changes of clothes: all items of clothing must be labeled as well as the bag it comes in.
- Rain Gear: (fall and spring) boots, pants, jacket
- Snow Gear: (winter) boots, pants, jacket, hat and gloves
- Rest: (1:30-3:30 students) recommended: cot blanket, pillow and stuffed animal.
- Quiet Bag: (1:30-3:30 students) you can bring a bag to keep here with quiet items for your child to do on their cot. ( book, legos, coloring book, etc.)
